Happy St. Patrick's Day

Quotes of the Day:

"If you like a drink, or to drink, don’t you think it would be wonderful if it were possible to keep that early buzz going indefinitely; to hang on to that clarity of mind, and to tap into the resolve and freedom of thought that alcohol promises? I suppose it’s the same with all mind altering drugs. They tease their slaves with the possibility of unlimited creativity, happiness, and freedom from doubt and fear, then dump them like a lover at the end of a summer romance." - John Merchant, in his Writers and Drinking article at the Open Writing website

"A friend of mine was teaching a survey course in American literature one summer session at the University of Houston. In the class were several older students, schoolteachers mostly. A teacher came up to him after class one day and said, 'Listen, I just want to know why every single author on our reading list was an alcoholic!' The professor ran his eye down the list. Edgar Allen Poe. Stephen Crane. Theodore Roethke. Herman Melville. Delmore Schwartz. Scott Fitzgerald. William Faulkner. The school-teacher was right. Every writer on his list was an alcoholic.

"The prototype in American letters of the alcoholic writer as tragic hero is Ernest Hemingway...
In 1939, Hemingway was ordered to cut down on his drinking. He tried to hold himself to three Scotches before dinner but he couldn't do it and, in 1940, he began breakfasting on tea and gin and swigging absinthe, whiskey, vodka and wine at various times during the day...His alcoholism brought on hypertension, kidney and liver diseases, edema of the ankles, high blood urea, mild diabetes mellitus and possibly hemochromatosis, recurrent muscle cramps, chronic sleeplessness and sexual impotence. He shot himself to death at age 62." - from the article, Writers and Alcohol, by Ann Waldron in The Washington Post (March 14, 1989)

Happy St. Patrick's Day,

If only book publishing had a patron saint, someone to drive out the plague of problems facing this always-challenging, always-changing business. A few pints may bring temporary relief today, but tomorrow we'll wake up with a hangover and the same question: How can anyone besides blockbuster authors and Jeff Bezos make money in publishing? My advice: READ MORE BOOKS! Read cutting-edge, award-winning business books -- and do I have a reading list for you...

This month’s features also include Nina L. Diamond's conversation with IPPY Award winner Steve Bergman (aka Samuel Shem), and my interview with a first-time author and Axiom Award winner Dan Burns author of the timely job interview book, The First 60 Seconds. Burns got a contract with indie standout Sourcebooks, and soon learned the importance of marketing himself and his book.

Last month's Indie Groundbreaking Book is Guerilla Marketing Goes Green, by marketing veterans Shel Horowitz and Jay Conrad Levinson, who assert that "When you treat the prospect as intelligent, base your business on ethics, and actually anticipate those prospects’ needs, your growth can be exponential—but if you use old-style interruption-oriented marketing that insults your prospects, you’re writing a recipe for failure."

Last month we launched a new column this month: Digital Book News - The High-Tech World of ePublishing, to help sort out some of the new technology and tools that will help our readers make that "transition from an all-print world to a hybrid world." Check out the MashLogic company and take the Vook for a test drive!
